Research Interests

Dr. Chatterjee's research centers on cybersecurity and AI governance — how organizations build the commitment, preparedness, and discipline needed to manage cyber risk and govern AI responsibly. His work examines how organizations institutionalize security practices, embed accountability into leadership and board oversight, and extend proven governance principles to the adoption and oversight of AI systems.

Dave Chatterjee is a leading voice on cybersecurity and AI governance, the creator of the Commitment-Preparedness-Discipline (CPD) Framework — a widely adopted methodology for building organizational resilience against cyber and AI-related risk — and the author of one of the most-cited studies on how organizations assimilate new technology. An Adjunct Associate Professor in Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering, he brings more than two decades of scholarship, industry engagement, and executive education to the question that now defines his work: how organizations can govern artificial intelligence with the same rigor they have learned to apply to cybersecurity.

His research has been cited more than 3,000 times. That landmark 2002 MIS Quarterly study on the institutional enablers of organizational technology assimilation — cited more than 1,400 times on its own — established the intellectual foundation for the CPD Framework: the insight that lasting security and governance outcomes depend less on tools than on how deeply practices are embedded in leadership commitment, organizational readiness, and disciplined execution. That same lens now guides his work on AI governance, where the challenge is not simply deploying new technology but institutionalizing accountability for it.

Dr. Chatterjee's writing reaches both scholarly and executive audiences. His work has appeared in MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, California Management Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, Business Horizons, and I by IMD, as well as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Business Insider, and Yahoo! Finance. He writes a recurring quarterly column for INFORMS' Analytics Magazine, and his teaching cases on cybersecurity and AI governance are distributed through Ivey Publishing, Harvard Business Publishing, SAGE Business Cases, and The Case Centre. His book Cybersecurity Readiness: A Holistic and High-Performance Approach (SAGE, 2021) introduced the CPD Framework to a global readership, and his tech-thriller The DeepFake Conspiracy (2025) became an Amazon Best Seller. He is currently completing Governing Cybersecurity and AI: The Commitment, Preparedness, and Discipline (CPD) Framework, which extends the methodology to the governance of AI.

As host and producer of the Cybersecurity Readiness Podcast Series, Dr. Chatterjee has published more than 110 episodes with CISOs, CIOs, board members, and researchers, reaching listeners in over 130 countries. He speaks and moderates CXO panels worldwide, conducts corporate training and workshops, and advises organizations through Cybersecurity Readiness Consultancy Services LLC. He is listed in the RSA Conference Expert Portal and is regularly interviewed and quoted by broadcast and print media on major cybersecurity and technology developments.

At Duke, Dr. Chatterjee has taught Cybersecurity 521, Cybersecurity Program Development, Operations, and Analysis, in the Master of Engineering in Cybersecurity program, and has taught in the Cybersecurity Executive program. He has also delivered guest lectures and mentored student product-design teams in the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program.

His leadership and service to the profession include serving as Chairman of the Board of the Society for Information Management (SIM), Atlanta Chapter; as a board member of the Cybersecurity Collaborative, advising CIOs and CISOs; and on CISO SWAT teams convened to address critical security challenges. He has served on the advisory boards of several technology and security companies and was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce (Taylor & Francis).

Dr. Chatterjee holds the NACD CERT Certificate in Cyber-Risk Oversight from the National Association of Corporate Directors, the Smart Cities and Critical Infrastructure Security Professional (SCCISP) credential from the IoT Security Institute, and the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) certification from ISC2, along with industry certifications in data analytics, ERP systems, and IT controls.
