Duke University’s Master in Financial Technology (FinTech) graduates are equipped with the technical, financial, and management expertise needed to lead financial innovation. One of those graduates is Muchen Guo, Duke FinTech class of 2024.

As part of the FinTech program, students are required to complete an internship to gain hands-on real-world experience in their field. Muchen completed an internship at Navy Federal Credit Union where he was a summer associate in strategic operations for credit card products. During his internship, Muchen made the most of it by delivering high-quality work and exceeding expectations. He used his project management skills to set clear milestones and maintain organized timelines for his projects. He also took the initiative to connect with colleagues and mentors across different departments, which allowed him to build meaningful relationships and gain a broader perspective of the organization. Muchen also sought out feedback regularly, which helped him enhance the quality of his final deliverable. The strong work ethic Muchen exhibited during his internship showed his commitment to growth and a high quality of work, leading him to be offered a full-time position at Navy Federal once he graduated.

After graduating in December of 2024, Muchen secured a role as a Business Intelligence Analyst at Navy Federal. In his role, Muchen evaluates portfolio performance data, as well as analyzes industry trends. He identifies opportunities to improve member experiences, revenue growth, and cost efficiency as well. Muchen also manages projects through all phases of the project’s lifecycle, in which he collaborates with stakeholders, analyzes and visualizes data, and delivers recommendations to advance credit card portfolio goals.

When reflecting on how the program prepared him for his current role, Muchen mentioned how the program provided him a well-rounded foundation in technical and analytical skills. The program’s Machine Learning and Data Wrangling courses provided Muchen with a strong technical expertise in Python and SQL. These courses also helped him develop a critical mindset about data, providing him the skills necessary to extract meaningful insights to solve real-world business problems.

The program encouraged me to think beyond the surface, challenging me to analyze complex patterns, assess financial implications, and make data-driven decisions.
