Duke University’s Master in Financial Technology (FinTech) graduates are equipped with the technical, financial, and management expertise needed to lead financial innovation. One of those graduates is Joey Chen, Duke FinTech class of 2023.

After graduation, Joey secured a role at U.S. Bank as a Quantitative Risk Model Analyst. In his role, Joey provides insights to leadership about how to balance risk, regulatory demands, and recommends investment decisions. Joey implements regulatory requirements and monitors the performance of forecast models to ensure compliance and accuracy. Additionally, he optimizes the bank’s investment mix and validates different hedging strategies are effectively mitigating risk. Joey is also part of the stress testing team, in which he helps create and implement stress test models, preparing the bank for potential financial disruptions.

When reflecting on how the program prepared him for his current role, Joey cited how the required internship gave him experience and skills he uses frequently in his role. Joey interned at a risk management and compliance firm based out of Washington D.C. As the firm was led by the SEC & CFTC seniors, he got experience collaborating with highly regarded commercial banks, crypto exchanges, and hedge funds to develop compliance strategies and risk management frameworks. All while deepening his skills and gaining real-world experience through his internship, Joey was able to deepen his industry knowledge and further his professional network.

Joey also cited how the coursework of the program greatly prepared him for his current role. Through the blend of technical coursework with real-world business applications, he developed cutting-edge AI skills grounded in a practical business context. This bridge between the technical and the business world prepared Joey to not only do well but thrive in an AI-driven financial landscape. Additionally, the weekly seminar series in the fall semester allowed him to connect with executives from companies like Two Sigma and PwC while gaining firsthand insights from seasoned professionals.
