Top Cybersecurity experts, officials, and practitioners on the stage of the Duke Cybersecurity Conference

For two days, the Duke in DC David M. Rubenstein Conference Center will become the stage of vivid and timely discussions on the most pressing topics in Cybersecurity. The second edition of the Duke Cybersecurity Conference will take place on September 26 and 27, providing immense opportunity for learning, debate and networking to world-leading practitioners, professors, and students.  ”The conference will be like an extended survey course in Cybersecurity, with conversations from leading practitioners in areas including ransomware, advanced persistent threats (APTs), threat intelligence best practices, law enforcement and private sector cooperation, insider threat investigations and cybersecurity policy and law,” said Arturo Ehuan, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Duke Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University and one of the hosts of the event. This year, Duke is co-hosting the conference with three important key partners: the FBI Association of Intelligence Analysts, Georgetown University’s Center for Security Studies (CSS), and George Mason University. Those interested in participating can still register. The organizers wanted to make the event an accessible opportunity for students and the public. To secure a spot, registrants will pay between $25 (for virtual attendees) and 100 USD for in person attendance.  Sales end on September 18. Students can still register for half price.

The conference will have 10 panels where experts and members of Academia will discuss current topics in cybersecurity. One of the panelists is Andrew Imbrie, Associate Professor of the Practice in the Gracias Chair in Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and an Affiliate at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, where he previously worked as a Senior Fellow and served as an advisor to the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence.

Carrie Cordero, Robert M. Gates Senior Fellow, and General Counsel at Center for New American Security will moderate the Cybersecurity Law and Policy Panel. Cordero is well known not only among practitioners, but also for her appearances and articles for major media outlets, such as CNN, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Atlantic, etc. 

On the same panel will be Shane T. Stansbury, the Robinson Everett Distinguished Fellow in the Center for Law, Ethics, and National Security and a Senior Lecturing Fellow in Law.  Shane served for more than eight years as Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York (SDNY), where he led some of the office’s most sensitive and noteworthy prosecutions in the areas of terrorism, cybercrime, espionage, money laundering, international public corruption, and global weapons trafficking. Another panelist from Duke is Randy Arvay, Ph. D, Asst. VP, DUHS, DHTS in Information Security Administration, Duke University.

Key officials and experts will join the panels: Manfred Boudreux-Dehmer, Chief Information Officer, NATO, Bob Osgood, a 26-year veteran FBI Computer Forensics Examiner and Technically Trained Special Agent, also Director for Digital Forensics at George Mason University; and Hans Nelson, Cyber Policy Advisor, US Mission to NATO; Cynthia Kaiser – Deputy Assistant Director, FBI Cyber Division;Colonel (Ret) Candice Frost, now an adjunct professor at Georgetown University after a 25 year career in intelligence and cyber operations at the CIA, NSA, and US Army . Luke Dembosky co-chairs Debevoise & Plimpton’s global Data Strategy and Security practice, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General for National Security at the U.S. Department of Justice, who led the DOJ’s response to many of the largest cyber incidents in recent years, serving as the senior DOJ official on the Target, Sony Pictures, Home Depot, Anthem and OPM breaches, among many others.

Conference’s keynote speaker is Andy Greenberg, senior writer for Wired Magazine and author Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin’s Most Dangerous Hackers and Tracers in the Dark: The Global Hunt for the Crime Lords of Cryptocurrency. Andy Greenberg will provide a behind-the-scenes look at unraveling the story behind one of the largest state-sponsored cyber-attacks in history and case studies of digital black-market takedowns & prolific criminals unmasked by tenacious investigators tracking them down by tracing their cryptocurrencies.
