Leveraging Military Experience for FinTech Success: Alex Ilgenfritz
Alex Ilgenfritz, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, is a soon-to-be graduate of the Master’s in Financial Technology program at Duke University. Through the online program, he gained skills in financial technology and research, preparing him for roles in blockchain and DeFi, all while working as a budget analyst for the U.S. Army.
Duke University’s Master’s in Financial Technology program has had exceptional veterans go through the program who go on to be leaders in financial innovation. Soon to join these leaders is Alex Ilgenfritz, a veteran and online student in the Master’s in Financial Technology program at Duke.
Alex served in the United States Marine Corp, serving in the III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa for three years and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego for two years. He performed in the Marine Corps band as a jazz saxophonist, as well as he handled the financial responsibilities of his unit. While overseas, he also pursued his first master’s degree in computer information and technology from UPenn. This furthered his passion for finance and investments.
As Alex realized he wanted to pivot into a blockchain/DeFi role and possibly wanted to pursue a PhD, he decided to pursue his Master of Engineering in Financial Technology at Duke. Through the program, Alex has strengthened his academic foundation with practical, implementable skills that complement his previous theoretical background. He also has gained substantial research experience, preparing him for both career paths. In addition to completing his degree, he has been working as a budget analyst and funds controller for the XVII Airborne Corps at Fort Liberty, NC.
Master of Financial Technology, Class 2024, Duke UniversityThe program has equipped me with critical financial technology knowledge and practical experience that enhances my work and allows for lateral moves in the DOD financial innovation space. It has opened pathways to pursue opportunities in the blockchain/DeFi space and laid the groundwork for potential PhD research, making me a more competitive and prepared applicant for future career transitions.
Alex will graduate in December 2024.
