Why did you apply for the ME in Cybersecurity? What career goals did you come to Duke with?

I applied to Duke University’s Master of Engineering program in Cyber-security because of a longstanding desire to be a part of this esteemed institution since childhood. I recognized the challenge and prestige associated with attending a top-tier university like Duke and took the chance. As an active-duty officer, I am determined to earn my master’s degree while serving, showcasing that it’s possible to achieve academic success alongside military service. My career goal is to graduate with my Master of Engineering in Cyber-security, and upon retirement, pursue a Juris doctor specializing in Cyber law.

Can you name 2-3 most important skills you gained during the program?

During my time on the program, I have to say that I have been able to gain several important skills that not only will help me in my role as a cyber security professional but as an active-duty officer as well.

Analytical and Critical Thinking: I have gained great insight into analytical & critical thinking. The rigorous coursework and research enabled me to tackle complex problems and make data driven decisions through innovative solutions. This skill has assisted me in analyzing larger problems especially within my role in the United States Army.

Technical proficiency: All courses that I have taken within the Cybersecurity program have allowed me to gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies and methodologies. The guidance from our excellent instructors who have experience in academia and industry has allowed me to maintain technical expertise that is necessary for advancing in specific engineering roles.

Leadership and communication: This program emphasizes developing leadership skills and abilities through effective communication. I have had multiple opportunities to work with students from all over the world with different educational backgrounds which has allowed me to become more of an asset when fostering the ability to lead projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams and articulate technical processes and concepts to diverse audiences.

What do you like most about the Duke Cyber program?

I love the Duke Cyber program because it has such an innovative curriculum that combines technical expertise with hands-on experience. This program is only setting up its students from the most cutting-edge cyber security challenges that we are currently seeing in the world today. The program has access to leading faculty and industry experts which enhances the overall learning experience. Additionally, Duke University maintains such a strong network and career support system that has assisted its graduates to achieve their professional aspirations.

Can you name one course that you found particularly important or relevant to you and why?  

It is challenging to single out one course as the most important because all of Dukes Cyber security courses are of exceptional quality taught by top tier faculty and staff. Each course offers unique value and contributes significantly to a comprehensive education that Duke commits to every student within its university walls.
