Former CFO for WeWork Capital Advisors talked with Fintech students about strategies for managing risk in fintech institutions

Richard Madsen was the guest speaker of the October 6 Duke FinTech Seminar
Richard Madsen, former CFO for WeWork Capital Advisors visited Duke recently to meet with the Duke Fintech students. As the guest seminar speaker on October 6, 2023, Madsen talked about his career and the financial organizations where he worked, including JP Morgan Chase & Co. and Ernst & Young. Mr. Madsen discussed the risks that financial institutions are facing, including operational and fiduciary risks and what are some of the strategies for managing risks in the organizations where he served.
Richard Madsen describes himself as a “versatile and pro-active finance and risk management professional with deep experience in working with businesses on financial performance, planning and budgeting, and operational risk/control evaluation.” Between 2020 and 2022 he served as CFO for WeWork Capital Advisors, which manages commercial real estate investments across the US and Europe. His duties covered finance and accounting matters related to its management company and funds as well as oversight of the company’s investment valuation process. From 2007 to 2020, for 12.5 years, Mr. Madsen worked for JP Morgan Asset Management, as Managing Director for several programs. Before that, he worked in similar roles at JP Morgan Chase & Co. and, previously, for Ernst & Young.
